About this position

Exciting interdisciplinary PhD opportunity in Applied Mathematics and Quantitative Ecology at Newcastle University.

The project is titled “Wind-Assisted Dispersal of Insect Tree Pests: An Interdisciplinary Modelling and Ecological Study”. It focuses on assessing the risk of invasive tree pests being transported into Great Britain by wind, combining mathematical modelling with ecological and biosecurity research.

You will work in a dynamic interdisciplinary team and be co-supervised by researchers at Newcastle University and Forest Research. The project offers experience in mathematical ecology, entomology, aerodynamics, atmospheric modelling, and epidemiology. Laboratory-based work may also be included to support model development and validation.

The post is aimed at candidates with a strong quantitative background, enthusiasm for coding and modelling, and a desire to apply mathematical approaches to real-world biosecurity and environmental challenges.

This is a PhD opening rather than a scholarship announcement. For more information, see the linked opportunity listing. Questions can be directed to Laura E Wadkin at [email protected].
