About this position

UMR1419 INRAE/UPPA Nutrition Metabolisme Aquaculture (NuMeA) is recruiting a PhD candidate for the ATHENA project, Attenuation of Thermal Stress through Adapted Nutritional Strategies. This doctoral opportunity is based in Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle in the French Basque Country, France, and focuses on aquaculture nutrition, fish physiology, thermal stress, and climate adaptation in rainbow trout.

The PhD will investigate how innovative nutritional strategies can improve the thermal resilience of fish exposed to rising water temperatures. The research combines in vitro cellular approaches, in vivo experimental aquaculture trials, and physiological, metabolic, molecular, and statistical analyses. The project sits at the intersection of fundamental biology and applied aquaculture, with a strong emphasis on practical solutions for climate-related stress in fish farming.

Eligible candidates should have a Master 2 or engineering degree in nutrition, aquaculture, physiology, cell biology, biochemistry, biology, or a related discipline. Experience in experimentation, cell culture, fish physiology, or aquaculture is welcome, but the team also values curiosity, rigor, motivation, and the ability to work collaboratively. The post highlights the importance of scientific communication and data analysis, including publication writing and presentation at conferences and seminars.

Funding details indicate a 3-year doctoral contract with a salary of approximately 2300€ gross per month. The application deadline is 26 June 2026. Applicants should send a CV and cover letter by email to Emilie Cardona and Florian Beaumatin. An oral audition is planned between 8 and 17 July 2026.

This is a strong fit for students interested in aquaculture research, fish nutrition, animal physiology, cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and environmental stress adaptation.
