About this position

PhD opportunity in Aquatic Physics / lake surface turbulence at Eawag and the University of Lausanne (UNIL), Switzerland.

The project focuses on unraveling the hidden dynamics of lake surfaces and studying turbulence in the surface layer of Lake Geneva using the LéXPLORE platform, microstructure profilers, and moored instruments. The work sits at the intersection of fundamental physics and environmental science, with strong links to limnology, physical oceanography, fluid dynamics, and environmental measurement.

The position is part of the recently funded SNSF TALES-χ project and is hosted in the Aquatic Physics group at Eawag Kastanienbaum in collaboration with the LAKES group at UNIL. The research aims to map turbulence patterns across depths and seasons, investigate atmospheric forcing, analyze energy pathways and heat budgets, and develop improved methods for continuous monitoring of surface turbulence. The project also contributes to a FAIR-compliant open-access database.

This is a fully funded 4-year PhD position with an expected start in summer 2026 or by mutual agreement. The call is open until filled, with interviews starting by 2026-02-01.

Eligibility highlights: outstanding master's graduates in physics, physical oceanography, mechanical engineering, environmental science, applied mathematics, or computer science. The post values interest in complex fluid dynamics, turbulence, high-frequency field observations, teamwork, and collaborative research.

To apply, submit an application letter, CV, optional Git repository link, and the names/contact details of two references via the official application webpage only.
