PhD in Artistic Research for Climate Justice and Wetlands at University of Groningen University of Groningen in Netherlands

The University of Groningen is offering a fully-funded PhD position as part of the NWO-funded JUST ART Consortium, focusing on artistic research for climate justice in the watery wetscapes of the Northern Netherlands. This project, titled "JUST TRANSITIONS. Re-Pairing Wetlands: Artistic Research for Just Multi-Species Relations in the Northern Netherlands," invites artists, makers, and researchers with a strong desire to develop their artistic research practices to apply. The research will explore participatory artistic methods to address climate justice, focusing on hydro-social relations in wetlands and engaging with multi-species and intersectional perspectives.

The PhD candidate will collaborate with societal partners and other academic institutions, including the Universities of Groningen and Aruba, and Art Academy Minerva/Hanze University of Applied Science. The project is part of a larger initiative offering 10 PhD positions across six universities, aiming to generate new knowledge and critically assess approaches that integrate scientific insights with artistic research for climate justice. Candidates will be expected to present findings in academic, artistic, and societal contexts, publish scholarly work, and contribute to educational toolkits and knowledge-sharing platforms.

Applicants must hold an MA in a relevant field, demonstrate an active artistic practice, and possess excellent research and communication skills in English (Dutch preferred). Experience with participatory art projects and artistic research is required, and prior knowledge of multispecies climate justice frameworks is desirable.
