The primary aim of the PhD is to develop and enhance theoretical and numerical models to better understand the evolution of concrete under complex environmental conditions, including overburden pressure, humidity gradients, and interactions with surrounding clay. The research will involve the development of a new model for creep and shrinkage in blended cementitious concrete, integrating hydro-chemical-mechanical processes. Extensive verification and validation will be performed using experimental data from previous studies and literature, supplemented by minimal new experiments as needed.
Structural scale simulations will be conducted to assess the mechanical stability and long-term performance of the connecting gallery lining, utilizing strain data collected over 22 years. This analysis will enable back-calculation of external pressures and inform the optimization of future repository designs. The project is multidisciplinary, combining civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geology, and materials science, and benefits from SCK CEN's international research environment and innovative facilities.
Applicants should hold a Master of Science in engineering, with expertise in mechanical engineering, computational mechanics, civil engineering (mechanics focus), or computational geomechanics. Excellent English language skills are required. The position is fully funded for four years, with access to SCK CEN's training programs and collaborative research opportunities.
