About this position
The UCL Institute of Archaeology, one of the largest centres for archaeology, cultural heritage, and museum studies, is inviting applications for a funded PhD position in biomolecular archaeology. The project, titled "Human or Animal? Biomolecular Analysis of Upper Palaeolithic Bone Artefacts to Explore Raw Material Selection," focuses on the analysis of bone artefacts from the Upper Palaeolithic period to determine their human or animal origin and to understand raw material selection strategies.
The successful candidate will receive comprehensive training in Palaeolithic archaeology, ZooMS analysis (species identification via collagen peptide fingerprinting), stable isotope analysis, and ancient DNA analysis. Additional training will cover data management, data processing, and statistical analysis, equipping the student with a broad skill set relevant to biomolecular and archaeological research.
Supervision will be provided by Professor Rhiannon Stevens (UCL Institute of Archaeology), Dr Selina Brace, and Dr Silvia Bello (both at the Natural History Museum). This collaborative supervision offers access to leading expertise and resources in both academic and museum research environments.
