About this position
DWI – Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials is recruiting a PhD student (f/m/d) in the area of biophysics, biochemistry, and biomaterials, with a research focus on the structure of biomolecular condensates.
The project is hosted in the research group of Dr. Charlotta Lorenz at DWI in Aachen, Germany. The work centers on understanding the structure–function relationship of phase-separated protein systems and how condensate structure changes during dissolution and stabilization. The research is highly interdisciplinary and combines protein handling, standard laboratory biochemistry, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), neutron scattering, light scattering, fluorescence microscopy, data analysis, and comparison with physical models.
Initial model systems include bovine serum albumin (BSA) and fused in sarcoma (FUS), with additional protein systems explored later. Small molecules such as ions, RNA, and disease-relevant chemicals may be added to study structural changes in condensates, including those relevant to neurological disease. The project is connected to broader questions in biophysics, biochemistry, materials science, and biomedical applications.
Eligibility: applicants should have completed or be close to completing an M.Sc. or comparable degree in (bio-)physics, (bio-)chemistry, materials science, mechanical/(bio)chemical engineering, or a related field. Strong motivation, teamwork, multidisciplinary interest, willingness to learn new techniques, and good English skills are required.
Funding: this is a paid PhD position with compensation based on the TV-L collective bargaining agreement. DWI also highlights strong supervision, collaborations, mentoring, training opportunities, conferences, and an international working environment.
Application: apply as soon as possible via the job portal. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Upload a CV, transcripts of records, list of references, and a motivation letter. For questions, contact [email protected].
