About this position

Call for applications for a PhD position at the University of Amsterdam (Faculty of Science), based at the Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS) and linked to the Centre for Urban Mental Health.

This project focuses on brain plasticity, THC exposure, coping behaviour, early life adversity, stress, social behaviour, and mental health. The research uses a mouse model to study how early adversity and adolescent cannabis exposure shape behaviour and neurobiology.

Methods include electrophysiology (in-vivo and ex-vivo), behavioural experiments, neurobiological analysis, and THC exposure via vapour models. The position is full-time (38 hours/week) and runs for 4 years (18 months plus extension).

Funding is fully funded, with a salary from €3,059 to €3,881 per month, plus holiday allowance, bonuses, PhD training, and opportunities to attend international conferences. A possible 30% tax benefit may be available for international candidates.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, Neuroscience, or Life Sciences; experience in lab work and animal research (Article 9 preferred); strong analytical skills; and a clear interest in brain plasticity, behaviour, stress, and resilience.

Deadline: 20 May 2026. Applicants should submit a detailed CV, motivation letter, and two recommendation letters. Contact person mentioned in the post is Dr. Rixt van der Veen.
