About this position

PhD student positions are available in cell fate decisions and tissue formation in zebrafish at the University of Lausanne (UNIL), in the Center for Integrative Genomics. The project asks how developing embryos build tissues with high precision despite variability in individual cell behavior. The lab will combine spatial transcriptomics, in toto live imaging, and computational analysis to study the zebrafish retina and early embryo.

The research is led by Prof. Yinan Wan. The lab’s recent work includes advances in spatial transcriptomics and whole-embryo imaging, and the position is designed for candidates interested in developmental biology, quantitative biology, imaging, and computational approaches. Successful applicants will conduct an independent research project, develop and apply new methods, analyze data, present at meetings and conferences, and contribute to publications. Teaching and mentoring opportunities are also mentioned.

Eligibility: the ideal candidate has completed an MSc in biology, biophysics, bioengineering, computational biology, or a related field. Strong interest in embryonic development, methodological innovation, and quantitative biology is expected. Experience with imaging, programming/modeling, zebrafish genetics, or molecular biology is a plus. Excellent scientific writing, communication, and interpersonal skills are required. The working language is English.

Funding and terms: the appointment is a PhD contract at 100% activity rate, initially for 1 year and renewable up to a maximum of 5 years. No stipend amount is stated. The expected start date is 1 February 2027 or by agreement, with applications evaluated from the end of July 2026 until the positions are filled.

How to apply: submit a single PDF containing a cover letter, CV, copy of your Master’s degree certificate, and contact details for at least two referees. Applications are accepted only through the official website link in the posting.
