About this position
Start date: January 2025 (flexible)Hosted at the University of Glasgow, the doctoral candidate will be part of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (European Union and UKRI) funded Doctoral Network NANAQUA - Training doctoral researchers in nanotechnology-enabled water treatment. More details on the network and partners can be found at https://nanaqua.eu/ The objective of this doctoral position is to engineer a suite of multimodal, responsive nanomaterial-based sensors for rapid and sensitive detection of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) in water pre- and post-treatment.We hope to create a multifunctional nano-platform capable of quick and precise identification of CECs in water systems. This entails designing, synthesizing, and characterizing nanomaterials with stimuli-responsive properties that can capture and report on trace levels of CECs through optical spectroscopy techniques. The project will innovate by incorporating CEC-specific binding moieties into the nanosensors and developing novel transduction methods, such as using gold nanoparticle aggregates for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and fluorophore displacement strategies for luminescence-based sensing. The candidate will validate this nano-platform’s effectiveness across various real-world samples, and in placements in the EU, ensuring it meets industrial requirements for CEC concentration detection and contributes to improved water treatment processes.Candidates are expected to undertake several research stays with network partners across the EU, and take part in regular network-wide workshop events, to learn from others in the network and disseminate their findings. The successful doctoral candidate will undertake research in the Bio Nano Sensing Laboratory, in the School of Chemistry. The Bio Nano Sensing group is part of the Functional Materials and Assemblies research grouping, and typically consists of 2-3 PhD students and 2-3 Post-Doctoral Researchers, as well as project students and visiting researchers. We aim to provide an state of the art synthetic chemistry facilities and an inclusive, supportive, and collaborative environment for researchers at all career stages. Eligibility: Candidates should have a good undergraduate (2:1 or 1st) and a master’s degree in chemistry, or a related discipline, with some evidence of specialisation in synthetic molecular and materials chemistry. Knowledge of supramolecular chemistry and optical spectroscopy for analytical chemistry is welcomed.The candidate must not have a doctorate or be already enrolled on a doctoral program.The candidate should have not spent more than 12 months in the last 3 years in the UK.
