About this position

Leiden University’s African Studies Centre Leiden is advertising a PhD position on Climate and Armed Forces in Africa, based in Leiden, the Netherlands. The project examines how climate change is reshaping security across Africa, with a particular focus on Kenya and the evolving role of armed forces in climate action.

The research themes include climate change, security, armed forces, civil-military relations, peacekeeping, disaster response, energy transition, reforestation, environmental protection, and climate intelligence. The successful candidate will conduct field research in Africa, publish and present findings, and write a PhD dissertation over a 4-year period.

Eligibility highlights include a master’s degree in a relevant field with a minimum grade of 8, experience researching in Africa, strong English and Dutch skills, excellent academic writing and research ability, and the capacity to work both independently and collaboratively.

Funding is provided as a salaried PhD appointment, starting at €3,059/month and increasing to €3,881/month in year 4, plus an 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% bonus, full public transport reimbursement, and training/development opportunities.

Funding details
