About this position

The Department of Decision Sciences and Information Management at the Faculty of Economics and Business, KU Leuven, Belgium, invites applications for a PhD position in Combinatorial Optimization and Algorithmic Game Theory. The research group operates at the intersection of discrete mathematics, theoretical computer science, and operations research, focusing on the design and analysis of algorithms and structural insights into combinatorial optimization and algorithmic game theory problems. Current projects include the study of network interdiction games, where players have an exponential number of strategies, and the search for new structural insights to compute approximately optimal strategies. The scope of the PhD project will be defined in collaboration with the successful candidate, considering their background and research interests.

Applicants should have a strong background in mathematics, theoretical computer science, or a related field, and must have recently completed or be about to complete a master’s degree in 2026. Demonstrated excellence in mathematics, including the ability to derive and express complex results formally and intuitively, is required, as evidenced by an outstanding master thesis and strong grades. Candidates should possess strong communication skills, proficiency in spoken and written English, and the ability to conduct independent research and collaborate within a team. Prior knowledge in combinatorial optimization or related areas—such as approximation algorithms, complexity theory, graph algorithms, linear and integer programming, game theory, or computational social choice—is advantageous. The position primarily involves research, with a limited teaching contribution, mainly guiding Master thesis students.

The offer includes full-time employment as a doctoral scholar, initially for one year and renewable for up to four years following positive evaluation. The tentative start date is September 2026, with flexibility depending on candidate availability. KU Leuven is Belgium’s largest university and ranks among the world’s top 50. The faculty is located in Leuven’s historic city center, close to the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Groot Begijnhof." The university provides a diverse, challenging, and collaborative work environment, with opportunities for participation in summer schools, workshops, conferences, and research visits. The position offers a competitive salary with numerous benefits, including holiday and end-of-year allowances, reimbursement of commuting costs, automatic inflation compensation, and more.

KU Leuven is committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and socially safe environment, embracing diversity as an asset and ensuring equal opportunity for all. Applications should be submitted via KU Leuven’s online tool and must include a motivation letter, CV with references, a writing sample (such as a master thesis or relevant coursework), and copies of diplomas and transcripts. For further information or questions about accessibility and support, contact Prof. Dr. Jannik Matuschke at [email protected] or visit his academic page.

Apply by June 27, 2026, via the KU Leuven application portal.
