The UCL Knowledge Lab at University College London is offering a fully funded PhD studentship in Computational Media Research, focusing on the project "The Body as a Future Instrument: Improving Musical Interaction in Extended Reality Environments using Biometric Interfaces." This interdisciplinary PhD explores how biometric interfaces and immersive technologies can transform musical expression and interaction in Extended Reality (XR) environments. The successful candidate will join a vibrant research environment at the UCL Knowledge Lab, working under the supervision of Dr Chris Rhodes and Professor Brigitta Zics.

Key research areas include Human–Computer Interaction (HCI), musical composition and interactive audio, extended reality (VR/AR/MR) development, applied machine learning, embodied interaction, game-engine development, and the Internet of Things (IoT). The project is ideal for candidates interested in the intersection of technology, music, and creative media, and offers opportunities to work with cutting-edge tools and interdisciplinary teams.

The studentship is fully funded for four years through the EPSRC Award 2026/27, covering tuition fees, an annual stipend of at least £23,466, and a Research Training Support Grant.
