About this position

A fully funded PhD position is available in the Working Group Critical Data & Surveillance Studies at the Center for Critical Computational Studies (C³S), Goethe University Frankfurt. The research group focuses on the geographical, political, and social aspects of digital transformation in the Majority World, including topics such as authoritarian surveillance, uneven datafication, Big Tech and development, politics of digital sovereignty, and data justice. The successful candidate will define their own PhD project within these areas and participate in research and teaching activities.

The position is for three years (75% part-time, E 13 TV-G-U), with possible extension, and is subject to final funding approval. Applicants must hold a master’s or equivalent degree in relevant social science fields (human geography, sociology, anthropology, political science, STS, development studies, etc.), with excellent academic performance. Candidates from psychology, management, economics, or humanities are not eligible.

Required skills include experience in critical data and surveillance studies, interdisciplinary research, teamwork, willingness to travel, strong analytical skills, and proficiency in English or German and a language of the Majority World. Non-German speakers must be willing to acquire a B2 German certificate within two years. Desirable qualifications include experience with international organisations, research methods, science communication, teaching experience, and international exposure.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
