About this position
This PhD opportunity at Aston University focuses on the retention of dry eye management formulations in the eye, specifically targeting the effectiveness and duration of ocular lubricants used in dry eye disease (DED) treatment. DED is a prevalent condition, affecting about one in three adults and one in five children, and is a significant concern in primary eye care. The UK market for DED is substantial, valued at £500 million, with global projections reaching £6 billion by 2025, highlighting the importance and impact of research in this area.
The project aims to review the current understanding of the retention of ocular lubricants with various constituents on the ocular surface, develop a novel clinical setup using a fluorophotometer for easy and regular investigation, and lead cross-over or randomised clinical trials assessing ocular surface and DED. The research will be conducted at the Aston Eye clinical research facility, utilizing advanced techniques to measure the retention of preservative-free lubricants, which commonly include polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol, polyvinyl alcohol, carboxymethylcellulose, hypromellose, sodium hyaluronate, and other ingredients such as glycerin, dextran, mineral oil, and buffers.
Applicants should have a strong academic background, with a First or Upper Second Class undergraduate degree in a relevant subject, or a combination of undergraduate and Masters degrees with high achievement. Overseas applicants are welcome but must fund the difference between Home and Overseas tuition fees (£17,712 for 2026/7). The project covers Home tuition fees, and candidates should discuss associated consumables costs with the supervisor before applying. The supervisor, Dr Debarun Dutta, can be contacted at [email protected] for further information and to confirm consumables discussions.
Applications must be complete and include all supporting documents: transcripts and certificates, a research statement, personal statement, CV, two academic references (at least one from the most recent university), evidence of English language proficiency, and a copy of passport. Interviews will be conducted online via Microsoft Teams for shortlisted candidates. The position is based at Aston University’s Birmingham campus, and regular in-person attendance is expected.
