About this position
This funded PhD position at Nantes Université offers an exciting opportunity to investigate the quantitative geomorphology of tectonics and erosion interactions in a stable continental domain, focusing on Northwestern France. The project addresses the challenge of detecting active faults in regions with low deformation rates and rare surface-rupturing earthquakes. Despite its reputation for low-to-moderate seismicity, Northwestern France has experienced several significant earthquakes, suggesting the reactivation of inherited crustal structures.
The research will utilize high-resolution topographic data, including nationwide LiDAR coverage at 50 cm resolution, to quantify geomorphic signatures of tectonic activity. The successful candidate will conduct quantitative morphometric analyses of landscapes and river networks near suspected active faults using GIS tools, Python-based workflows, and TopoToolbox. The main objective is to distinguish subtle tectonic signals from other landscape processes such as erosion, sedimentation, and sea-level change. Geomorphic indicators will be compared with independent constraints, including instrumental seismicity, historical and archaeological earthquake records, long-term erosion rates, and regional deformation estimates.
Depending on the candidate’s interests, the project may also involve field investigations such as paleoseismological trenching and sediment core analysis, as well as numerical modeling of tectonic–erosion–sedimentation interactions. The PhD student will join a dynamic, multidisciplinary research environment within the ANR FaSiRé project and the EPOS-France research infrastructure, collaborating with researchers in seismology, tectonics, geomorphology, archaeology, and geomechanics.
Applicants must have a Master’s degree or equivalent in Earth Sciences, with a strong background in geomorphology and/or tectonics. Experience with GIS and quantitative topographic analysis, as well as programming skills (Python preferred), is required. Candidates should be able to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team, and possess a good command of English. Application materials include a detailed CV, cover letter, transcripts of grades and rankings, and a letter of appreciation from the supervisor of the Master’s research internship (mandatory for the 2nd year, if applicable for the 1st year).
The position is fully funded, with a full-time contract (35 hours/week), supported by the ANR FaSiRé project and EPOS-France research infrastructure. The application deadline is 12 May 2026, and the position starts on 1 October 2026. For further information or to apply, visit the application portal or contact the supervisors by email.
