The Environment Water (ENWAT) doctoral programme at the University of Stuttgart offers an international research-focused PhD opportunity in the fields of environmental science and water. Hosted by the Civil and Environmental Engineering Sciences Department, ENWAT brings together roughly 50 doctoral candidates and five participating institutions within the faculty, providing a broad and interdisciplinary research environment. Regular seminars where research progress is discussed with all ENWAT doctoral researchers and supervisors are mandatory and take place twice a year. Courses are held in English, with German also available, and participants may write their doctoral thesis in either language. International guest lecturers contribute to the academic environment, and structured research training and supervision are provided. The supervisor-student ratio is approximately 1:10, ensuring personalized guidance. Support for international students includes welcome events, buddy programmes, tutors, cultural and linguistic preparation, pick-up service, specialist counselling, visa assistance, accommodation help, and registration support, coordinated by the International Center of the University of Stuttgart.

There are no tuition fees, but a semester contribution of approximately 200 EUR is required. Living expenses are estimated at about 1,050 EUR per month. Non-EU students must demonstrate sufficient finances for 12 months, while EU citizens may apply for state-guaranteed loans. No funding opportunities are available within the university, so applicants should plan accordingly. Accommodation is available in on-site halls of residence, with furnished dorm rooms ranging from 320 to 450 EUR per month.

Academic admission requirements include a 'good' or better MSc, Dipl-Ing, or equivalent 'Diplom' as accepted by the University of Stuttgart, with strong knowledge in environment and water or a relevant dissertation project. English proficiency must be demonstrated by TOEFL (minimum 213 CBT), IELTS (Academic Band 6.5), proof of native English, or completion of a university course taught in English. Consent from a faculty member to supervise the thesis is required, and applicants must provide two letters of reference from professors or one letter from an ENWAT faculty member willing to supervise. International students without prior German must attend intensive German language courses before starting the programme.
