Uppsala University’s Department of Earth Sciences is offering a PhD position in Environmental Analysis with a focus on peatland management, as part of the EU project ForPeat. The research centers on the interface of water and carbon management in drained forest peatlands, with fieldwork conducted at experimental sites near Uppsala, Sweden. The project aims to develop practical, science-based solutions that balance climate action, biodiversity conservation, and bioeconomic needs, and involves collaboration with partners from 15 countries.

Key responsibilities include designing and conducting field campaigns, collecting and analyzing data on water table dynamics, biodiversity, water quality, and greenhouse gas fluxes, and managing datasets with reproducible workflows. The position also involves participation in national and international meetings, workshops, and consortium activities, as well as developing scientific publications and presenting research at conferences. Doctoral coursework and fulfillment of PhD degree requirements at Uppsala University are integral to the role.

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in environmental science, earth sciences, ecology, hydrology, water management, or a related field, or equivalent qualifications. Required skills include experience with fieldwork (preferably in peatlands, wetlands, or forest ecosystems), a valid driver’s license, strong computer and data analysis skills, and excellent English proficiency. Additional qualifications such as interest or experience in peatland ecology, hydrology, biogeochemistry, forest management, chemical analyses, hydrological modelling, greenhouse gas measurements, and GIS are advantageous. Personal suitability, reliability in fieldwork, teamwork, and commitment to high-quality research are highly valued.

The position is full-time, with a fixed salary and governed by Swedish higher education regulations. The start date is 1 April 2026 or as agreed.
