About this position
Utrecht University is offering a fully funded PhD position in Equine Intestinal Microbiome and Resistome, based in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Clinical Sciences, in the Netherlands. This research project focuses on investigating the equine intestinal microbiome and resistome, with the aim of understanding their roles in gastrointestinal health and the development and spread of antimicrobial resistance. The project is a collaboration between the Equine Internal Medicine group and the Clinical Infectiology group, building on previous work by Dr. Aldert Zomer, Dr. Mathijs Theelen, Dr. Rosa Houben, and Prof. Jaap Wagenaar.
The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team of veterinarians, clinicians, molecular microbiologists, and bioinformaticians, and will have access to state-of-the-art facilities at Utrecht University Equine Hospital and the Clinical Infectiology Research Group. Research activities will include working with existing datasets, setting up new studies, collecting samples from horses, and performing laboratory experiments using techniques such as 16S rRNA sequencing, shotgun metagenomic sequencing, and qPCR. The project also explores interventions like faecal microbiota transplantation to promote equine health and limit antimicrobial resistance.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in veterinary medicine, microbiology, bioinformatics, or a related field, and demonstrate a strong interest in molecular microbiology and antimicrobial resistance. Experience with bioinformatics analyses is advantageous. Candidates should be able to work independently and collaboratively, communicate scientific ideas effectively in English, and be committed to keeping up with advances in the field. The position offers a one-year contract with the possibility of extension to four years, a competitive salary, and comprehensive benefits including holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and professional development opportunities.
To apply, submit your CV and a motivation letter via the Utrecht University job portal by 29 March 2026. For further information, contact Dr. Mathijs Theelen at [email protected]. This is an excellent opportunity for candidates passionate about microbiome research, equine health, and antimicrobial resistance to develop their academic career in a leading European research environment.
