About this position
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position focused on the ethical and empirical study of climate responsibility. This interdisciplinary project, based in the Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities, explores the pressing question: Who is responsible for climate action when governments and corporations fail to act? The research will combine philosophy and social psychology to examine ethical debates on fairness, responsibility, and power, as well as public perceptions of climate responsibility and the roles of governments, citizens, and corporations.
Supervised by Jan Willem Wieland (Ethics) and Félice van Nunspeet (Social Psychology), the successful candidate will conduct both normative and empirical research, collaborate within the SOCION research consortium, and contribute to international publications and presentations. Teaching responsibilities will comprise approximately 10% of the role.
Applicants should hold an MA or MSc in Philosophy (preferably with a focus on Ethics) and demonstrate an interest in Social Psychology. Strong academic writing and analytical skills are essential, along with proficiency in English and Dutch. Experience with qualitative or quantitative research and a background in psychology are advantageous.
The position offers a 4-year contract with a monthly salary ranging from €3,059 to €3,881, generous holidays, bonuses, personal development support, and pension benefits. Application materials include a CV, motivation letter, writing sample (~8,000 words), transcripts (BA and MA), and two references. The application deadline is 1 April 2026, with interviews scheduled for 16 and 23 April 2026. For more information and to apply, visit the official vacancy page.
