About this position

Utrecht University is advertising a PhD position on Fine Particles in Shallow Groundwater Systems in the Department of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Geosciences, Netherlands. The project focuses on hydrogeology, quaternary sedimentology, groundwater flow, particle transport, and the clogging of ATES wells in Utrecht’s upper aquifer.

The successful candidate will investigate the origin, mobilization, and filtration of fine particles in shallow groundwater systems. The research combines subsurface data, mapping of Pleistocene fluvial and glaciofluvial sediments, column-scale flow experiments, and field-scale numerical modelling of groundwater flow and particle dynamics. The work is strongly interdisciplinary and connects geology, environmental science, physics, and subsurface engineering.

Applicants should have an MSc in Earth Sciences, Physical Geography, Hydrogeology, Physics, Environmental Engineering, or a related field. Strong analytical and programming skills are expected, especially in Python, MATLAB, or similar tools. Experience with experimental methods, porous-media flow and transport modelling, reactive transport, or particle-fluid interactions is desirable. Excellent English communication skills are required.

The position is full-time for one year initially, with extension to four years after a successful assessment. Funding includes a gross monthly salary of €3,059 to €3,881, plus holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits under the Dutch university collective agreement.

The application deadline is 21 June 2026. Applicants must apply through Utrecht University’s online portal; email applications are not accepted. The vacancy is led by Dr Thomas Sweijen, with collaboration involving Dr Kim Cohen.
