About this position

Project Overview: This PhD project investigates the complex interplay between environmental pollution and parasitism in fish, focusing on how chemical contamination increases fish susceptibility to parasites and alters their behaviour and physiology. The research aims to inform effective fisheries management and aquaculture planning by developing an evidence-based framework for using parasites as bioindicators of habitat disturbance.

Background: With the global population projected to grow by nearly 20% in the next 30 years, the demand for fish protein is expected to triple, making up about half of global edible meat production. However, parasite-driven diseases threaten the resilience of fish production in both fisheries and aquaculture, leading to significant economic losses. Parasites, which constitute nearly half of all species, play a crucial role in ecosystem functioning but are often overlooked in ecological studies. Their diverse life histories make them sensitive indicators of environmental stressors such as pollution, with some parasite types declining and others thriving in response to chemical disturbances.

Research Focus: The project will combine methodologies from fish biology, parasitology, ecotoxicology, animal behaviour, and ecophysiology to explore the trade-offs of parasitism for fish in polluted aquatic environments. The goal is to understand how pollution and parasites interact to affect fish health and to use this knowledge to develop early-warning systems for habitat disturbance, ultimately supporting conservation and sustainable fisheries management.

Training and Environment: The successful candidate will join the IGNITE Doctoral Landscape Award programme at the University of Southampton, hosted at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton. The programme offers comprehensive personal and professional development, interdisciplinary training, and opportunities to collaborate with academic, research, and industry partners. Training will cover animal behaviour, physiology, parasitology, ecotoxicology, behavioural ecology, and quantitative data analysis. Students will gain both laboratory and field experience and have opportunities to present their work at international conferences.

Funding: The IGNITE DLA provides full funding for 3.5 years, including a tax-free stipend at the UKRI standard rate (£20,780 for 2025/26), Home tuition fees, and a waiver for the difference between Home and International tuition fees. A Research Training Support Grant of £2,200 per year is available for project costs, conferences, and training.

Eligibility: Applicants should have a UK bachelor’s degree with upper second-class honours or higher in a relevant subject (or international equivalent). English language proficiency is required (IELTS 6.5 overall, minimum 6.0 in all components, or equivalent). Both UK and international students are eligible, but international places are limited due to funding constraints.
