About this position

KTH Royal Institute of Technology is advertising a PhD position in fluid dynamics and streaming electrification within the FLOW research environment and the Fluid and Surface Group at the Department of Engineering Mechanics.

The project focuses on the electrokinetic phenomenon of streaming electrification, where liquid flow over a solid surface generates charge separation. This can create serious issues in high-voltage power transformers. The research will use computational fluid dynamics and turbulence modeling to understand when and why the phenomenon occurs and to help prevent it through better design and operating limits.

The position is part of a strong research community with researchers, postdocs, and PhD students working on a broad range of fluid mechanics topics. The project is funded by Hitachi, which also provides additional industrial supervision.

Eligibility highlights: a second-cycle degree such as a master's degree, or at least 240 higher education credits including 60 second-cycle credits, or equivalent knowledge. A background in fluid dynamics is a merit, and experience in computational fluid dynamics is also a merit. English proficiency equivalent to English B/6 is required.

Application deadline: 30 April 2026. Applicants must apply through KTH’s recruitment system and include diplomas, transcripts, proof of language requirements, CV, a motivation/application letter, and representative publications or technical reports.
