About this position

PhD opportunity at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Grid Impact Assessment of Optimized Energy Communities.

This doctoral project sits within the third-cycle subject Energy and Environmental Systems / Energy Technology and is part of a Swedish Energy Agency-funded pilot and demonstration initiative on energy transition through efficient optimization of local energy resources.

The research focuses on how energy communities can optimize local resources such as solar PV, batteries, heat pumps, and electric vehicles through energy management, while also assessing impacts on the electric grid network. The doctoral student will work on digital twins, advanced modelling and optimization of local energy systems, techno-economic analysis, grid-impact studies, and scenario modelling for large-scale replication.

Supervision is proposed by Jagruti Thakur, Björn Laumert, and Patrik Ollas (RISE).

Eligibility highlights include a relevant second-cycle degree or equivalent, prior coursework in energy systems, optimization methods, and power grid analysis, plus mandatory English proficiency equivalent to English B/6. Experience in data analysis, thermal network analysis, and power grid automation is an advantage.

The position is a full-time doctoral employment in Stockholm with salary according to KTH's doctoral student salary agreement and standard employee benefits. Applications must be submitted through KTH's recruitment system before 2026-07-01.
