About this position
A fully funded PhD position in Health Data Science is available at the Department of Global Public Health, Karolinska Institutet, within the Climate Extremes & Population Health Sciences team in Stockholm, Sweden. The research project focuses on understanding how climate extremes influence the spread and frequency of mosquito-borne diseases such as West Nile Virus, Dengue, and Malaria across Africa and Europe. The doctoral student will employ time-series approaches and complex/causal systems modelling, integrating climatic, environmental (e.g., land use), socioeconomic, and policy-response data to examine the main drivers of vector-borne disease transmission.
This position is part of the Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network “Understanding and Predicting Impacts of Climate Extremes under Global Change,” coordinated by Uppsala University, and offers strong training, networking, and research exchange opportunities. The student will also be affiliated with the Swedish Center of Impacts from Climate Extremes (CLIMES). International secondments are planned at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium) and the Department of Epidemiology, Lazio Region (Italy).
Applicants should have a master’s degree in computer or data science, statistics, mathematics, or a related field, with strong data science experience, advanced programming skills in R and/or Python, and fluency in English. Experience with large-scale climate or health data is advantageous. The MSCA mobility rule applies: candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years before recruitment. Personal qualities such as curiosity, motivation, independence, and collaboration are highly valued.
The position is a full-time, four-year doctoral studentship with a contractual salary, funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network. Employees benefit from a creative and inspiring environment, access to a modern gym, and medical care reimbursements. The application deadline is 16 February 2026, with a planned start in Spring 2026.
To apply, candidates must submit their application through both the Varbi recruitment system and the EURAXESS platform, including a personal letter, CV, degree projects, publications, and documentation of eligibility. Applications can be submitted in English or Swedish. For more information, visit the provided links.
