The PhD programme in Heritage Studies at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) offers a unique opportunity for doctoral candidates to engage in qualitative and quantitative research on the protection and use of mankind's heritage in an international and interdisciplinary context. The programme is affiliated with the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Urban Planning, and is designed to strengthen BTU's research profile in Global Change and Transformation Processes.

Doctoral students conduct individual research in areas such as heritage conservation and management, architectural history, urban and regional planning, or civil engineering. The programme integrates students into a diverse group of international researchers, fostering collaboration and exchange. The curriculum is structured and international, preparing students for both the doctoral process and post-doctoral professional development through a compulsory set of modules (30 ECTS) focused on research and methodological skills, as well as transferable skills for academic careers.

Over three years, students are expected to write their dissertation and complete five compulsory modules: Academic Research and Methods, Status Seminar Heritage Studies, Progress Reports PhD Thesis Research Colloquium, Essentials of Grant Proposal Writing, and PhD Thesis Writing Skills. All lectures and seminars are mandatory, and students must be present during lecture periods (April–July and October–February). The programme allows for personalized curricula and research stays abroad, with all instruction, research, and examination conducted in English.

BTU provides additional workshops, networking opportunities, and short-term funding for conference trips and research stays. The Graduate Research School and Continuing Education Department offer support at various stages of academic and professional development. The university charges no tuition fees, but a semester contribution of 374 EUR covers student services and council costs. Living expenses are estimated at 780–1,000 EUR per month, including rent, groceries, health insurance, and miscellaneous costs. The semester ticket includes the "Deutschlandticket" for unlimited local public transport across Germany.

Limited scholarships are available for international students already enrolled at BTU, and more information can be found on the university's scholarship website. Applicants must hold a MSc (or equivalent) in Heritage Studies, Architecture, Building and Conservation, Urban/Regional Planning, or a related field in Social Sciences, Law, or Political Science, with a minimum final grade of 2.3 (German system). A comprehensive research proposal aligned with the programme's research areas is required. English proficiency must be demonstrated via TOEFL, Cambridge, or IELTS tests unless the applicant holds a relevant English-language degree.
