About this position

Call for applications for a Doctoral Researcher in Historical Game Studies at the University of Luxembourg, hosted by the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH). This PhD sits at the intersection of history, games, digital media, public history, digital storytelling, and cultural memory.

The project invites you to study how games and interactive media represent historical events such as colonialism, war, and heritage conflicts, how they shape public understanding of the past, and how they can be used for education, research, and engagement. Possible research directions include difficult histories in games, games as tools for education and historical research, games as cultural heritage and archival objects, and the role of AI, immersive media, and experimental storytelling.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in History, Digital Humanities, Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Anthropology, or a related field. The post looks for strong interest in history, games, and public engagement, some experience with digital tools or interactive media, and strong writing and research skills. Bonus experience includes game design tools such as Unity or Twine, and work with archives, exhibitions, or digital history projects. A minimum B2 language level is required.

Funding includes a full-time PhD appointment for 36 months with a gross salary of €41,976 per year. The post is based in an international research environment at the Belval campus. The announcement notes that there is no fixed deadline and that applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so candidates should apply early.

To apply, submit a CV, motivation/cover letter, and academic transcripts through the University of Luxembourg recruitment portal.
