About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Amsterdam in Housing and Inequality Across Societies (Micro-Level).
This call is for a PhD Candidate in the Faculty of Social & Behavioural Sciences, working in the Department of Geography, Planning & International Development and the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research, within the research group Political Economic Geography.
The project is part of HOU-EQUAL and examines how housing systems shape inequality across societies. The research compares housing contexts in the Netherlands, Finland, Ireland, Spain, and Japan, with a focus on how access to housing, living conditions, and housing arrangements affect wealth, wellbeing, life chances, and intergenerational inequality.
The role is strongly research-oriented and quantitative. The successful candidate will build and analyse large datasets, work with longitudinal and cross-sectional data, use register datasets (including Dutch and Finnish data), and apply spatial/GIS analysis. The position also involves publishing in academic journals, collaborating internationally, travelling for research visits to Japan and Finland, and teaching approximately 10% of the time.
Eligibility highlights: background in housing studies, geography, sociology, or urban studies; strong quantitative analysis skills; experience with longitudinal modelling; and familiarity with R, Stata, SPSS, and GIS/spatial analysis. The post also seeks a team player with strong analytical thinking.
Funding: fully funded PhD, 4-year contract (1 year + 3-year extension), salary from €3,059 to €3,881 per month, plus holiday allowance and bonuses. Training and career development are included.
Deadline: 25 May 2026.
How to apply: prepare a motivation letter and CV, then submit the application via the University of Amsterdam vacancy page. Rowan Arundel is listed as the contact person.
