About this position

The Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK CEN) is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on innovative circular concrete for nuclear applications. This research addresses Belgium’s long-term nuclear waste management challenges, including near-surface and deep geological disposal, where material selection and design strategies must ensure durability and performance over centuries. As a PhD candidate, you will investigate the mechanical and durability properties of circular concrete formulations using a design of experiments (DoE) approach. The research will focus on high ordinary Portland cement (OPC) replacement levels (50%–90%) with supplementary cementitious materials such as ground granulated blast-furnace slag, metakaolin, silica fume, and limestone fillers. Key scientific objectives include quantitative assessment of carbonation, chloride ingress resistance, and shrinkage potential, as well as evaluating the applicability of current structural design frameworks to these next-generation materials. The project aims to propose updates to codes and standards to accommodate innovative concrete technologies for nuclear infrastructure.

SCK CEN provides a unique international research environment, close cooperation with the academic sector, and access to state-of-the-art facilities designed for nuclear experiments. The SCK CEN Academy offers excellent training opportunities and multidisciplinary collaboration with experts in concrete materials science, structural engineering, and nuclear technology. The PhD position is based in Mol, Antwerp, Belgium, and is expected to last four years.
