About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Amsterdam (Amsterdam Law School) in Legal and Ethical Governance of AI in Healthcare. This is a fully funded PhD with 2 positions available, focused on two related research tracks: Generative AI in Healthcare (EU Horizon Project) and Fairness in Medical AI (NWO-Vidi Project).

The project sits at the intersection of law, healthcare ethics, AI governance, and medical AI. Research themes include ethics-by-design and compliance-by-design frameworks, responsible AI in clinical decision-making, bias and inequality in AI healthcare systems, and the development of a multidimensional concept of fairness. Methods may include legal and literature analysis, stakeholder engagement, focus groups, Delphi studies, and conference presentations.

Applicants should have a master’s degree in Law, Health Law, Bioethics, Technology Law, or a closely related field. Strong legal and empirical research skills, academic writing ability, and interest in AI governance and healthcare ethics are expected. Knowledge of EU frameworks such as the AI Act, GDPR, and MDR is a plus, as is experience with interviews or focus groups.

The position is based in Amsterdam, Netherlands, at the Law Centre for Health & Life. Funding includes a salary of €3,059 to €3,881 per month, holiday allowance, bonuses, and PhD training at Amsterdam Law School. The contract is for 4 years (1 year + 3-year extension).

Deadline: 18 May 2026. Start date: around September 2026.

How to apply: Submit a combined application package including a motivation letter and CV, a research proposal (max 800 words), a writing sample (max 30 pages), details of 2 referees, and degree certificates. Use the University of Amsterdam vacancy page to apply.
