About this position

PhD opportunity at NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research in the Netherlands for a project on marine ecology, fish population modelling, ecological modelling, and North Sea benthic habitats. The project focuses on how changes in benthic habitats and the expansion of offshore wind farms may affect key fish species and the wider demersal food web.

You will work on connecting upper and lower trophic level dynamics, with particular attention to Atlantic cod and plaice and their prey species. The role involves using existing fish population models and helping develop mechanistic links to lower trophic level models in a broader food-web context. The position is embedded in the MONS programme and involves collaboration with NIOZ researchers and partners such as Wageningen Marine Research and Deltares.

The successful candidate should have an MSc in a relevant discipline and experience with mathematical modelling, population dynamic analyses, and/or theoretical ecological methods. Programming skills in Python, R, C++ or Matlab are an advantage. Strong English communication skills, self-motivation, teamwork, adaptability, and good organization are important.

This is a full-time PhD employment for 4 years total, starting with a 1-year appointment and extension after a positive evaluation. Funding includes salary according to the Dutch research institute PhD scale, plus holiday allowance, year-end bonus, pension, public transport reimbursement, relocation support, and help finding accommodation.

Deadline: 26 June 2026. The position is planned to start on 1 September 2026. Applications are submitted via the NIOZ vacancy portal.
