PhD in Mathematics and Applications - Call for Applications Bocconi University in Italy

The PhD Program in Mathematics and Applications at Bocconi University is a newly established, four-year program taught in English, designed to foster interdisciplinary innovation and research excellence. Hosted by the Department of Decision Sciences, which boasts internationally recognized faculty and a vibrant research environment, the program offers rigorous core training in Mathematical Analysis during the first year, complemented by electives in mathematics, economics, finance, statistics, and machine learning. The second year continues advanced, research-oriented coursework, often delivered by visiting professors, and prepares students for research that begins early and intensifies in the third and fourth years, culminating in thesis writing and opportunities for international research exchanges. The program emphasizes both pure and applied mathematics, with distinctive opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration in economics, finance, decision theory, and computer science, reflecting Bocconi’s strengths in the social sciences.

Faculty members are leading researchers in Mathematical Analysis, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Decision Theory, and Mathematical Finance, and the program regularly hosts visiting scholars for specialized courses. Graduates are prepared for research careers in academia, research institutes, and quantitative roles in industry, finance, strategy consulting, operations research, optimization, and AI/ML labs. The program is open to highly motivated candidates with MSc degrees in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Economics, Data Science, Engineering, or related fields, and requires at least a B2 (CEFR) level of English proficiency.

Applications are assessed based on CV, academic records, statement of purpose, and optionally up to three reference letters. Four fully funded fellowships are available, provided by the Tech Europe Foundation (TEF), covering tuition and stipend for the full duration.
