About this position

Call for applications for a PhD in Media and Prison Studies with a France focus at the University of Antwerp. This project is part of the ERC-funded WALLS2BRIDGES initiative and examines how prison communities create media such as letters, podcasts, films, and digital content, and how media reshapes narratives on justice and incarceration.

The research has a comparative dimension across France, Türkiye, the UK, and the US, with a specific focus on NGOs, abolitionist groups, cultural and educational initiatives in prisons, and public debates on justice and incarceration in France. The position is strongly oriented toward qualitative research, including interviews, ethnography, and discourse analysis, and includes academic publishing, international presentations, collaboration with NGOs and activists, and public engagement activities.

Eligibility highlights include a Master’s degree in media studies, sociology, anthropology, criminology, or a related field; fluency in English and French; experience with qualitative methods; interest in prison systems, justice, and media; and ethical awareness when working with vulnerable communities. Experience with NGOs, activism, or prison-related research is a bonus.

The PhD is funded for up to 4 years and includes mobility benefits such as a bike allowance or public transport support, plus access to Antwerp Doctoral School training. The deadline is 15 June 2026, with interviews planned for July 2026 and a start date in September 2026 or soon after.
