About this position

Call for applications for a PhD position in Medieval/Early Modern Philosophy at the University of Groningen, Faculty of Philosophy, Netherlands.

The project focuses on the history of medieval or early-modern philosophy, with possible research topics ranging from Aquinas to Descartes. The successful candidate will work on a PhD dissertation within the Groningen Graduate School of Philosophy, which offers a structured PhD training programme, and will also assist with teaching activities.

This is a fully funded doctoral position with a four-year scholarship/contract. The appointment begins as a one-year temporary position with the option of renewal for three more years, subject to satisfactory progress in the first year. The salary is €3,059–€3,881 gross per month for 0.8–1.0 FTE, plus an end-of-year bonus and holiday allowance.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Philosophy, preferably with a specialisation in the history of medieval or early modern philosophy. Strong academic results, documented expertise in the field, excellent English writing and communication skills, and academic writing ability are required. Depending on the topic, knowledge of Latin may be required. Dutch is not required.
