About this position

This fully funded PhD project at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), in collaboration with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore, offers an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of synthetic polymer chemistry and advanced materials design. The research focuses on developing reversible polymer networks and remotely triggered systems, with an emphasis on monomer design—creating molecular building blocks that encode function directly into the polymer network. This enables precise control over material properties and responsiveness, moving beyond traditional materials synthesis to establish design principles that translate from molecular structure to macroscopic behaviour.

The project aims to unlock polymer systems that are robust under use yet can be selectively deconstructed under controlled conditions. Key research activities include designing and synthesising functional monomers, developing structure–property relationships, and exploring stimulus-responsive systems such as those triggered by light, heat, or chemical signals. The candidate will work across synthesis, characterisation, and materials evaluation in a highly collaborative setting.

A distinctive feature of this PhD is its international dimension: the successful candidate will undertake a fully funded research stay of up to 12 months at NTU Singapore, gaining experience in two leading research environments and benefiting from complementary expertise and facilities.

The Centre for Materials Science at QUT provides a vibrant research environment, and the project is supervised by Associate Professor H Frisch. The scholarship covers a living allowance stipend, full tuition fees, and Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for up to 3.5 years.

Applicants should have a strong background in synthetic organic chemistry or polymer chemistry, laboratory-based research experience (synthesis, characterisation, or materials science), and an interest in connecting fundamental chemistry with real-world material function. Applications are open year-round until a suitable candidate is appointed.

To apply, send your CV and a short letter of motivation to [email protected]. For further details, visit the project page or contact the supervisor directly.
