About this position

This fully funded PhD project at the University of Southampton focuses on the development of state-of-the-art heteropolymetallic architectures—specifically organometallic transition-metal and lanthanide complexes—for two-photon molecular upconversion luminescence. The research aims to create novel bioimaging probes that address the limitations of conventional luminescent imaging, such as autofluorescence and poor tissue penetration, by leveraging upconversion (UC) processes that enable ultra-long-lifetime phosphorescence within the biological window.

As a student, you will synthesize and characterize molecular and supramolecular [d-f] heteropolynuclear assemblies, utilizing coordination and organometallic d-metal complexes (including RuII, IrIII, PtII) in combination with azamacrocyclic lanthanide complexes (YbIII, NdIII). The project involves multistep synthesis, rigorous photophysical characterization, and investigation of fundamental energy-transfer processes via luminescence spectroscopy. The ultimate goal is to develop unprecedented in vivo imaging platforms based on molecular upconversion.

You will gain hands-on experience in synthetic organic and organometallic chemistry, coordination chemistry, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Access to state-of-the-art facilities is provided, including NMR spectroscopy, IR, HPLC, mass spectrometry, and world-leading X-ray diffraction resources.
