About this position

The University of Leeds, in collaboration with King's College London, is offering a fully funded PhD opportunity through the Engineering Biology for Biomedicine (EB4BM) CDT. This interdisciplinary project focuses on the development of alternative protein nanofibre scaffolds for advanced mucosal tissue generation. The research aims to engineer sustainable, biocompatible, and adhesive nanofibre scaffolds using electrospinning and surface modification techniques. These scaffolds will support fibroblast growth and differentiation, forming a collagen-rich matrix suitable for co-culturing with mucin-producing epithelial cells. The ultimate goal is to create a self-generating artificial mucosa that closely mimics the architecture and mechanics of natural mucosal tissue.

The project will investigate nutrient transport, metabolic profiles, and cellular resilience under various environmental stresses, as well as characterise the mechanical properties and biodegradability of the engineered tissue. Expected outcomes include the development of a protein nanofibre–cell hybrid matrix, scalable fabrication protocols, and a prototype artificial mucosa for use in biomedical research, wound healing, and mucus replacement therapies. This research combines expertise in nanotechnology, cell biology, and bioprocessing, and offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of materials science and biomedical engineering.
