About this position

The University of Luxembourg invites applications for a PhD position in Pain Modulation through Vagus Nerve Stimulation. This opportunity is based within the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE), renowned for its interdisciplinary research culture and expertise spanning humanities, linguistics, cognitive sciences, and social and educational sciences. The successful candidate will join the research group on Stress, Pain, and Gene-environment Interplay, part of the Institute of Health and Behaviour in the Department of Behavioural and Cognitive Sciences, and conduct studies in the Psychobiology of Pain Processing Laboratory (P3Lab).

The PhD project centers on investigating pain modulation via transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS). Through a series of laboratory studies, the candidate will systematically explore the efficacy and mechanisms of taVNS on experimental pain in healthy participants. The research will involve monitoring autonomic nervous system activity, such as heart rate and electrodermal activity, and assessing psychological factors. A comprehensive battery of pain measurements across different modalities will be used. The candidate is expected to publish findings in peer-reviewed journals, present at international conferences, and participate in doctoral training activities.

Applicants should possess a Master's degree in psychology, neuroscience, or a related field, with strong academic performance. Experience with experimental psychophysiological research, a keen interest in pain and vagus nerve stimulation, familiarity with ecological momentary assessment, and excellent statistical skills are required. Fluency in English and German is essential. The University offers a modern, multilingual, and international environment, high-quality equipment, and close ties to industry and society. The position is a fixed-term contract for 36 months, full-time, with a yearly gross salary of EUR 41976.

To apply, candidates must submit a CV, cover letter detailing motivation and alignment with the project, transcripts, and reference letters if available. Applications should be submitted online via the HR system; email applications will not be considered. Early applications are encouraged as review begins upon receipt. The University of Luxembourg is committed to inclusivity and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds.

This PhD position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in pain modulation and vagus nerve stimulation, within a vibrant academic community in Luxembourg.
