About this position

KTH Royal Institute of Technology is advertising two PhD positions in Photonic Integrated Circuits for Sensing and Communication within the Department of Micro and Nanosystems (MST), School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

The project focuses on advancing silicon photonics and photonic integrated circuits (PICs) by addressing key limitations in scalability and power consumption of active components. The research aims to develop novel device concepts leveraging nanoscale mechanics to enable ultra-efficient modulation and integrated sensing. The work is part of the SYMPHONY project and is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe and EIC programmes.

Students will work at the intersection of nanofabrication, photonics, and device physics, with access to KTH’s micro- and nano-fabrication cleanrooms and characterization labs on the main campus. The project involves collaboration with fellow PhD students, industrial partners, and research groups within and outside KTH.

Eligible backgrounds include electrical engineering, applied physics, photonics, materials science, mechanical engineering, or related fields. Applicants must meet Swedish doctoral admission requirements and have English proficiency equivalent to English B/6. A strong academic record and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are important selection criteria.

The application deadline is 30 April 2026. Applications must be submitted through KTH’s recruitment system and include diplomas, transcripts, language certificates, CV, a motivation letter, and representative publications or technical reports.
