About this position

This PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology focuses on the physical control of a soft artificial heart, combining research in soft robotics, nonlinear dynamics, and biomedical engineering. The project aims to harness embodied nonlinear mechanical and dynamical behaviour to develop effective control strategies for soft robotic hearts, leveraging self-oscillations, mechanical adaptation, and self-regulation. The research is part of the Holland Hybrid Heart consortium and builds on recent advances in soft fluidic artificial ventricles and self-oscillating fluidic circuits, with the goal of integrating these behaviours into robust control systems for medical devices.

As a PhD candidate, you will design and experimentally implement fluidic circuits that physically control the soft artificial heart, including mechanisms to create a heartbeat and self-regulation (such as the Frank Starling mechanism or baroreceptor reflex). You will determine optimal sensor placement and develop controllers to regulate pump power for target physiological performance. The project involves rapid prototyping, measurement and analysis tool development, and simulation-guided design. Collaboration with consortium members working on animal trials and device development is expected.

The Autonomous Matter & Machines Lab, part of the Dynamics & Control Section in the Mechanical Engineering Department, provides a collaborative and inclusive research environment with access to state-of-the-art fabrication and experimental facilities. The lab explores autonomous behaviour in soft machines and materials, drawing inspiration from nonlinear phenomena and aiming to translate fundamental insights into real-world applications. The research intersects physics, robotics, materials science, and medical technology, contributing to new design principles for soft medical devices and robotic systems that operate reliably in uncertain environments.

Applicants should have a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Robotics, or a related field, with a research-oriented attitude, hands-on experimental skills, data analysis affinity, and fluency in English (C1 level). The position offers full-time employment for four years, competitive salary and benefits, training programs, and support for international candidates. The university is located in Brainport Eindhoven, a leading tech region, and provides a vibrant academic community and excellent campus facilities.

To apply, submit your application online with a cover letter, CV, and references. The vacancy remains open until filled, with priority given to complete applications. For further information, contact Dr. Bas Overvelde or [email protected]. Applications sent by email or post will not be processed. A pre-employment screening may be part of the selection procedure.
