Stockholm University’s Department of Physical Geography invites applications for a fully funded four-year PhD position focused on mapping permafrost landforms and soils. This research is at the forefront of climate change science, contributing to major international projects such as PetCat (Rapid Permafrost Thaw Carbon Trajectories) and CLIMPEAT (ERC-funded climate research project). The successful candidate will join a dynamic, international research environment and collaborate with leading scientists in the field.

Research Focus:

• Mapping permafrost thaw and greenhouse gas emissions
• Geospatial data analysis across circumpolar regions
• Creation of advanced geospatial databases
• Mapping geomorphology, hydrology, vegetation, and freeze-thaw dynamics
• Satellite and environmental data analysis
• Potential fieldwork in permafrost regions

Eligibility: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent, 240 ECTS) in Geography, Earth Sciences, Environmental or Natural Sciences, or a related discipline. Required skills include geodata analysis, mapping, analytical thinking, and strong English communication. Knowledge of permafrost systems is advantageous. The program should include independent work totaling at least 30 higher education credits, with 15 at an advanced level.
