Through a combination of numerical material modeling and physical hardware experiments, the PhD researcher will baseline the performance evolution of currently deployed monitoring systems. The focus will be on a subsystem relevant to the UK's unique operational environment, particularly considering the impact of humidity and temperature due to the port-based nature of many installations. The ultimate goal is to develop a toolkit that enables stakeholders to predict performance changes, plan for system replacement or renewal, and optimize routine testing and tuning in collaboration with system vendors.
The project is fully funded, covering tuition fees and providing a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£20,780 for 2025/26). Due to the terms of the NTR-Net funding, applicants may be subject to special nationality requirements, and standard rules regarding intellectual property and publications will apply.
Applicants should possess a first degree in physics or a closely related subject, typically at the UK upper second-class honours level or higher, or hold a relevant postgraduate master's qualification.
