About this position

This PhD project at Aston University investigates how multinational enterprises (MNEs) reconfigure their international business strategies in response to rising geopolitical tensions and global fragmentation since the 2008 financial crisis. The research focuses on firms from India and China investing in the UK and EU, providing a comparative perspective on how geopolitical risk influences ownership structures, location strategies, and external linkages. The project addresses three core questions: how geopolitical risk reshapes ownership and entry modes, whether institutional proximity is now a more decisive factor in location strategy, and the role of air connectivity and people flows in facilitating cross-border knowledge spillovers and innovation networks.

Drawing on large-scale secondary datasets, the project employs advanced microeconometric and spatial analytical methods to examine evolving patterns of internationalisation. The research aims to contribute to debates on the future of globalisation and offer practical insights for managers and policymakers seeking to sustain resilient UK–Asia economic ties in an uncertain world.

The successful applicant will join the College of Business and Social Sciences at Aston University, based in Birmingham, UK. The project is supervised by Professor S Khorana and Dr ZC Cao. Applicants must hold a First or Upper Second Class Honours undergraduate degree and a Masters degree with Merit or Distinction in relevant subjects. Essential skills include a strong background in International Business, International Economics, or related disciplines, and prior training in econometrics. Desirable skills include distinction in MSc or BSc dissertation, experience with firm-level data, and proficiency in statistical software such as R or Stata. English language requirements must be met, and all supporting documents must be submitted with the application.

Funding covers all tuition fees, but living expenses, relocation, and campus visits are not included. International students must meet financial requirements for visa, flights, and NHS Surcharge. The application deadline is May 18, 2026. Interviews will be conducted online via Microsoft Teams for shortlisted candidates.

For enquiries, contact Professor S Khorana at [email protected] or the Postgraduate Admissions team at [email protected]. Further information on financial requirements can be found on the Aston University website. Apply via the provided FindAPhD link.
