About this position
The Eindhoven University of Technology invites applications for a PhD position in Regenerative Ecologies of Design and Production. This research project is part of the Regenerative Ecologies of Design and Production for European Heritage (RED&Pro) initiative, which aims to transform design practice into a regenerative ecological activity. The project challenges anthropocentric worldviews and explores more-than-human design, focusing on collaborative acts between humans and nonhumans to restore, renew, and revitalize socio-technical and ecological systems.
As a PhD candidate, you will conduct literature reviews on regenerative design, perform multispecies ethnography in various regenerative design studios (such as backyards, community gardens, farms, and forests), and create, document, and exhibit design exemplars. Your work will contribute to the making-with cluster at Industrial Design and help establish the MoTH studio—a regenerative biosensing cohabitation space on the TU/e campus.
The RED&Pro project brings together professional designers, craft practitioners, industries, and policymakers to pioneer new models of value creation that go beyond sustainability. Through six experimental RED-Labs, the project pilots place-based production ecosystems integrating traditional craft techniques, digital innovation, bioregional material ecologies, and circular resource flows. These efforts aim to reduce reliance on global supply chains and strengthen resilient urban–rural economies, demonstrating how cultural heritage can underpin a new regenerative economy for Europe.
The position offers full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. You will spend 10–15% of your time on teaching tasks. Salary is in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale P (€3,059–€3,881/month), plus a year-end bonus (8.3%), annual vacation pay (8%), pension scheme, paid pregnancy and maternity leave, partially paid parental leave, commuting and home working allowances, and a tax compensation scheme (30% facility) for international candidates. Additional benefits include access to the TU/e Student Sports Center, technical infrastructure, on-campus childcare, and high-quality training programs.
Applicants must have a master’s degree (or equivalent) in a design-related field, a research-oriented attitude, and curiosity. Research experience, interdisciplinary design practice, and familiarity with regenerative practices (biomaterial prototyping, multispecies ethnography, gardening) are advantageous. Skills in sketching, filmmaking, and design communication/documentation are desirable. Fluent spoken and written English at C1 level is required.
To apply, submit your application online via the provided link. Include a cover letter, CV with publications and references, and a design portfolio (PDF or link). Only complete applications will be prioritized. Applications sent by email or post will not be processed. The vacancy will remain open until filled, with a deadline of June 14, 2026.
