About this position
PhD Position: Single-Cell Gene Expression Dynamics at Radboud University
This is a call for two PhD positions in the Faculty of Science at Radboud University (Nijmegen, Netherlands) focused on single-cell gene expression, gene expression noise, and quantitative biology. The project asks how cells make decisions in noisy environments and how random fluctuations in protein levels influence cell fate decisions, development, cancer, and disease progression.
The research is hosted in Dr. Maike Hansen’s group and involves an interdisciplinary environment with access to single-molecule microscopy, advanced imaging systems, omics, proteomics, single-cell sequencing, high-performance computing, and mathematical/computational modelling. The post also mentions collaboration with Prof. Boudewijn Burgering at UMCU and membership in the Oncode Institute.
Applicants should have an MSc in life sciences or a related area such as molecular biology, computational biology, biochemistry, biophysics, bioengineering, or bioinformatics. Strong analytical and creative thinking, English communication skills, and comfort in international interdisciplinary teams are important. Experience in bioinformatics, computational modelling, or image analysis is a plus, but not required. One position is computational and one is experimental, so applicants should clearly state their background and preferred track.
The appointment is a full-time paid PhD for 4 years total, with an initial 1.5-year contract and extension after positive evaluation. Salary starts at €3,059 gross/month and rises to €3,881 gross/month in year four, plus an 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, and generous leave and staff benefits.
Deadline: 28 May 2026. How to apply: submit your application through the Radboud University portal and address the letter to Dr. Maike Hansen.
