About this position

The University of Twente is offering a fully funded PhD position as part of the DynamiCity Horizon Europe project, focusing on smart active mobility to improve health and wellbeing. The research aims to transform urban transport into a net positive contributor for health, wellbeing, and sustainability, with a special emphasis on supporting cancer survivorship and prevention. The project will explore the integration of active mobility (walking, cycling) and micro-mobility (such as mopeds) with smart mobility technologies to enhance public health outcomes.

The successful candidate will design and evaluate smart mobility solutions, assess the safety, health, and behavioural impacts of mobility interventions, and support pilot implementations in the municipality of Helmond, which serves as a living lab. The role involves close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and European partners, providing direct societal impact and opportunities for international networking.

Applicants should have an MSc degree in Civil/Transport Engineering, Computer Science, Intelligent Transport Systems, or a related field, or a Biomedical Engineering/Health degree with an affinity for transport. The ability to work across disciplines (transport and health), proficiency in English (C1), and strong communication and teamwork skills are required. Dutch language skills are preferred but not mandatory.

The position offers a competitive salary (€3,059–€3,881/month), holiday allowance (8%), year-end bonus (8.3%), pension scheme, and a minimum of 29 leave days (full-time). Additional benefits include access to world-class research facilities, mentorship, career guidance, and international collaboration opportunities. The University of Twente provides a green, lively campus and a supportive research environment.

To apply, candidates should submit their application via the University of Twente application portal before 5 April 2026. The application should include a cover letter (max 1 page, emphasizing motivation, qualifications, and research ideas), a CV with courses and grades, an MSc research summary (max ½ page), and contact details of two referees.
