PhD Opportunity: Navigating Social Network Deficits Among Migrant Populations

Utrecht University is offering a fully funded 4-year PhD position focused on understanding how migrants in the Netherlands recognize and navigate the negative aspects of their social networks, such as pressure, stigma, and misinformation. The project applies Cognitive Dissonance Theory and action-theoretical perspectives to explore when and why migrants identify social network deficits as harmful, and the strategies they use to cope or adjust over time. Research methods include a survey experiment using vignettes and qualitative interviews with multiple migrant groups, requiring Dutch language proficiency for effective communication.

Eligibility: Applicants should hold a graduate degree in Sociology, Social Policy, or a related Social Science field. Experience with mixed-method research is advantageous. Dutch language proficiency is mandatory for conducting interviews. Supervision & Collaboration: The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Verena Seibel and Tobias H. Stark, collaborating with another PhD candidate, a postdoc, and senior scholars. The project is part of a diverse and inclusive research environment at Utrecht University.
