About this position

The University of Basel, in collaboration with the European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC), is offering a joint PhD position focused on quantifying the role of soil erosion in phosphorus loads and eutrophication in European freshwaters. This project aims to develop integrated and reproducible approaches to assess and reduce soil- and sediment-driven nutrient pollution in European catchments. The research will utilize monitoring data from the EU Water Framework Directive to calibrate and validate advanced sediment routing and modelling approaches, and will design a European-scale turbidity and sediment monitoring framework that combines in situ observations with satellite remote sensing.

The successful candidate will spend two years at the JRC working with the EU Soil Observatory soil erosion team and two years at the University of Basel. Applicants should have or be close to completing a Master's degree in ecology, soil science, agricultural, environmental or related sciences. A strong interest in soil erosion modelling and phosphorus-driven eutrophication, as well as experience in soil monitoring and erosion processes, is required. Skills in GIS, spatial analysis of large-scale data, modelling, remote sensing, and programming (R or Python) are highly desirable. Fluency in English, strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently are essential.

This is an excellent opportunity for candidates interested in environmental science, earth science, and agriculture, particularly those with a focus on soil erosion, nutrient pollution, and freshwater ecosystem health. The position is fully funded, with the candidate benefiting from the resources and expertise of both the JRC and the University of Basel. The application deadline is April 6, 2026.
