About this position
The University of Notre Dame’s PhD in Sustainable Development is a STEM-designated, interdisciplinary doctoral program designed to prepare scholars to address critical global challenges such as climate change mitigation and adaptation, environmental governance, and development policy. The program is housed at the Keough School of Global Affairs and is inspired by Catholic social teaching, with a commitment to improving human well-being and safeguarding the planet, especially for vulnerable populations.
Students benefit from world-class mentorship, engaged scholarship, and policy-relevant research, working closely with distinguished faculty such as Tracy Kijewski-Correa, Krister Andersson, Santosh Kumar Gautam, Ellis Adjei Adams, Emily Grubert, and others. The curriculum includes 15 credits of core coursework in sustainable development, research methods, and policy communication, 21 credits of electives (with at least three in advanced research methods), and 30 dissertation credits. Students typically complete the program in five years, progressing through oral qualifying exams, candidacy exams, and a final dissertation defense.
Throughout the program, students serve as Teaching Assistants (TAs) or Research Assistants (RAs), gaining valuable professional development experience. TAs lead discussions, grade assignments, and assist with course delivery, while RAs collaborate with faculty on cutting-edge research projects. All students must serve as a TA for at least two semesters.
Admitted students receive comprehensive financial support, including a 12-month stipend, full tuition scholarship, health insurance subsidy, and up to $4,000 for conference presentations and professional development. By Year 4, students are required to apply for at least one external grant or fellowship valued at $10,000. The program offers access to a global network of scholars and practitioners, partnerships with leading international organizations, and a supportive environment fostering academic excellence and ethical leadership.
Applicants should have a strong academic background in relevant fields and a demonstrated commitment to sustainable development. Application materials include a statement of purpose, academic transcripts, GRE scores, English proficiency test scores (for non-native speakers), a writing sample, and three letters of recommendation. The program welcomes students from diverse backgrounds. For more information, visit the program website or contact the admissions office at [email protected].
