About this position
Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI) is offering a fully funded PhD position in turbulent forced convection within the HEATFORCE project (FIS2). The research focuses on heat transfer in turbulent flows with temperature-dependent fluid properties, using direct numerical simulations to study how variable properties affect wall friction and heat transfer in both smooth and rough configurations.
The project spans multiple fluids, including air, water, molten salts, and liquid metals, and is hosted in the PhD program in Mathematics in Natural, Social and Life Sciences at GSSI in L’Aquila, Italy. The PhD researcher will run large-scale simulations, analyse high-fidelity data, and present findings at international conferences.
Preferred backgrounds include aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, physics, or related fields. Strong interest in fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and computational methods is highlighted.
Funding: fully funded for four years, with additional support such as housing or rent contribution, meal vouchers, and HPC access.
Deadline: 15 May 2026 at 15:00. Start date: 1 November 2026.
Interested candidates should apply via the GSSI application portal using the provided link and review the project details before submitting their application.
